Tai Chi emphasizes slow, controlled and low-impact movements making it an ideal exercise for seniors, even those with limited mobility. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, clinical studies show that elderly people have better hand-eye coordination and are less prone to falls when they practice Tai Chi. The National Institutes of Health has also found it to be an excellent therapy for Parkinson's patients. Qi Gong can even be practiced in a seated position for those who are unable to stand. According to Peter M. Wayne, PhD (Director of Research at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine), "Tai Chi can not only reduce stress and depression, but also relieve pain, build strength, and improve cognitive function, perhaps even delaying dementia."
